چکیده

We study the long-term evolution of relativistic jets in collapsars and examine the effects of viewing angle on the subsequent gamma ray bursts. We carry out a series of high-resolution simulations of a jet propagating through a stellar envelope in 2D cylindrical coordinates using the FLASH relativistic hydrodynamics module. For the first time, simulations are carried out using an adaptive mesh that allows for a large dynamic range inside the star while still being efficient enough to follow the evolution of the jet long after it breaks out from the star. Our simulations allow us to single out three phases in the jet evolution: a precursor phase in which relativistic material turbulently shed from the head of the jet first emerges from the star, a shocked jet phase where a fully shocked jet of material is emerging, and an unshocked jet phase where the jet consists of a free-streaming, unshocked core surrounded by a thin boundary layer of shocked jet material. The appearance of these phases will be different to observers at different angles. The precursor has a wide opening angle and would be visible far off axis. The shocked phase has a relatively narrow opening angle that is constant in time. During the unshocked jet phase the opening angle increases logarithmically with time. As a consequence, some observers see prolonged dead times of emission even for constant properties of the jet injected in the stellar core. We also present an analytic model that is able to reproduce the overall properties of the jet and its evolution. We finally discuss the observational implications of our results, emphasizing the possible ways to test progenitor models through the effects of jet propagation in the star. In an appendix, we present 1D and 2D tests of the FLASH relativistic hydrodynamics module. Gamma Ray Bursts and the transition to Quark Matter in Compact Stars

We discuss a model for long Gamma-Ray-Bursts in which the central engine is associated with the conversion process of a metastable hadronic star into a star containing quark matter. We analyze also the observational signatures of the model, i.e. the Supernova-GRB temporal connection and the existence of long quiescent times in the temporal structure of Gamma-Ray-Bursts. Several observations ind...

Properties of Relativistic Jets in Gamma-ray Burst Afterglows

We extend our calculation of physical parameters of GRB jets by modeling the broadband emission of the afterglows 970508, 980519, 991208, 000926, 000418, and 010222. Together with 990123, 990510, 991216, and 000301c, there are ten well-observed afterglows for which the initial opening angle of the GRB jet can be constrained. The jet energies (after the GRB phase) obtained for this set of afterg...

The Connection between Gamma-Ray Bursts and Extremely Metal-Poor Stars as Nucleosynthetic Probes of the Early Universe

The connection between the long GRBs and Type Ic Supernovae (SNe) has revealed the interesting diversity: (i) GRB-SNe, (ii) Non-GRB Hypernovae (HNe), (iii) X-Ray Flash (XRF)SNe, and (iv) Non-SN GRBs (or dark HNe). We show that nucleosynthetic properties found in the above diversity are connected to the variation of the abundance patterns of extremelymetal-poor (EMP) stars, such as the excess of...

Effect of the temperature profile of the accretion disk on the structure of jets and outflows around protostars

Magnetic fields play an important role in creating, driving, and in the evolution of outflows and jets from protostars and accretion disks. On the other hand, the temperature profile of the accretion disks may also affect the structure of the magnetic field and outflows. In this paper, we use the self-similar method in cylindrical coordinates to investigate the effect of the temperature profile...

Properties of Relativistic Jets in Eight Gamma-ray Burst Afterglows

We extend our calculation of physical parameters of GRB afterglows through modelling of their broadband emission to three other cases: 980519, 000926, and 010222. Together with 990123, 990510, 991208, 991216, and 000301c, there are eight afterglows whose optical and radio emission allow determination of the burst collimation. The jet energies (after the GRB phase) obtained for this sample of ei...
